Are Bleeding Hemorrhoids Serious

Bleeding hemorrhoids are common in those experiencing this painful condition. While it can be an uncomfortable and embarrassing subject to discuss, it is imperative that you seek treatment, particularly if you are experiencing bleeding. No matter the underlying condition, bleeding is always a warning flag which should be heeded.

Hemorrhoids are bulges in the blood vessels of the anus and rectum caused by straining to go to the bathroom or trying to pass hard stool. Normally, these bulges remain within the anal cavity but occasionally they will protrude. Whether internal or external, they can become irritated and begin to seep blood. If you notice blood on your toilet paper or in the toilet, it is likely that you are experiencing a bleeding hemorrhoid.

Though blood in the stool is a primary symptom, it can also be a sign of a more serious digestive issue, including colorectal cancer. If you experience bleeding which lasts for several days, you should see your doctor to rule out anything more serious. Once your doctor has determined that you are in fact suffering from bleeding hemorrhoids, you can discuss treatments and decide which works best for you.

Treatment for a bleeding hemorrhoid can be as simple as sitting in a warm tub or sitz bath several times a day or applying ice packs to the affected area, or the application of a topical cream. There are several simple natural home remedies which can help to sooth irritated skin and reduce pain and itching, including the use of Witch Hazel ointment and taking Butcher’s Broom and Horse Chestnut, each of which can be taken in pill or tea form.

If pain and bleeding is persistent your doctor may have to resort to invasive measures to eliminate the flareups. There are several procedures which can be used to treat bleeding hemorrhoids, including banding and the use of infrared light. Both of these treatments work to constrict the circulation to the hemorrhoid, eventually causing it to dry up and disappear.
