The number of asthma cases within the population seems to increase every year, perhaps largely due to increased pollution within our environment.

Although there is no quick fix cure for asthma there are a number of simple preventative measures you can take to help manage your asthma such as:

1) Limit Dust

It is important to keep dust inside the home to a minimum by regular vacuuming with a cleaner installed with a high quality filter to trap the dust. Other furniture and household items should regularly be wiped down with a damp cloth to eliminate dust buildup.

2) Avoid Mould Spores

Rooms and other damp areas should also be avoided as mould can often grow in such areas and the mould spores can become airborne and trigger asthma attacks in the same way as pollen. Always use an extraction fan in bathroom areas and if necessary wipe excess water from walls etc after showering to prevent mould from growing.

3) Ban Indoor Smoking

Smoking can not only trigger asthma attacks but also increases the likelihood of a child developing asthma so the home should be made a smoke free environment to prevent the potential problems it poses.

4) Avoid Pollen

Pollen from flowers and grasses is a major trigger for asthma and should be avoided where possible. The warmer months are of particular importance for asthma sufferers as the pollen in the air is at its highest and it is wise to stay indoors wherever possible to avoid the potential for a pollen induced asthma attack.

5) Food Preparation Smells

The smoke and aromas given off when cooking can be a major irritant to asthma sufferers so take steps to reduce such problems. If a proper extraction fan is not available then ensure there is an open window in the kitchen to help the cooking smells to escape outside.

6) Limit Pet Contact

If you own a cat or dog then it is a good idea to limit contact and wash your pet regularly as fine particles of hair, saliva and skin are all known asthma triggers. Also ensure that the pet does not come into the house as pet hair easily attaches to furniture and bedding and is difficult to remove completely.

7) Regular Exercise

Leading a healthy lifestyle is a great strategy to help manage asthma. Provided you keep any medication within easy access and follow a doctor approved fitness regime the benefits of exercise in controlling asthma cannot be overstated.

Following the simple asthma prevention measures above will greatly reduce the frequency and severity of asthma attacks. Prevention is the best treatment for asthma and the seriousness of this condition should not be taken lightly as attacks can lead to death in extreme cases. Take action to control your own asthma and breathe easier starting today.

An asthma patient breathes in an unnatural way by using only the upper portion of the chest. This is very unnatural for the system as the full chest is not used in this way.

Over the period of time the patient develops weakness of chest muscles as the muscles are not being used properly. At the time of an attack the chest muscles work extra hard as they work against constricted air passages. It is advisable for the asthma patients to do breathing exercises as they can really help build up the chest muscles involved in respiration and can contribute towards saving a person’s life at the time of an attack.

The aim of breathing exercises is to relax the chest muscles that are overworked. And to teach a person to get out of the habit of using the chest muscles for breathing and start using the abdominal muscles and the diaphragm. For learning the proper use of diaphragm and lower chest the asthma patient has to start concentrating on breathing out rather than breathing in.

The chest has to be completely emptied by raising the diaphragm by voluntary contraction of the abdominal muscles and lower chest. This process if practiced regularly is actually against the situation that happens during an attack. By doing this exercise a person tries to achieve the reversal of the condition of asthmatic attack. By regular practice the body learns to imitate this condition and the muscles try to come in this situation by involuntary action.

Care should be taken that the breathing out process has to be a slow process and not a hasty one otherwise it may lead to wheezing and discomfort. For doing the breathing exercises correctly the person may need to be retrained to push out the abdomen and concentrate the mental energies on doing this. This initiates the lower chest breathing and the muscles get used to it after a while.

In the ancient practice of yoga there is a system of breathing exercises which is known as pranayama. The word pranayama is derived from the word ‘prana’, which means vital oxygen. In broader terms the word prana indicates towards the life that is visible in all the vital activities of a living being. Prana is the life force that remains in action till the time a living being is alive.

It is of utmost importance for the human being to keep the vital prana active and rejuvenated at any point in time for complete health, vitality and longevity. Pranayama is a science for keeping this vital life force hail and hearty. Pranayama involves a lot of breathing exercises.

There are many different types of exercises and this is a science that can be learnt either by the help of a guru, which is most preferable, or alternately in the occasion of non – availability of a guru, it can also be learnt by the help of books and literature available on the subject. Pranayama is a form of exercises that can give immense vitality to the system and is known to practically recover and rejuvenate a person from any kind of ailment. This goes to prove the power of these forms of exercises.

Yoga in itself is a very powerful science and it should not be considered to be just simple exercises. Similarly pranayama should not be considered simple breathing exercises. Anything that has the power to cure even strong ailments should be done in a proper way.

Although the procedure for pranayama looks very simple, considering the power of this form of science it is advisable for the patients suffering from any kind of ailments to take an opinion from one’s doctor before trying out the pranayama exercises. Also a person should not get too excited and start doing all exercises together. There should be given considerable gap between mastering one exercise and starting another.

In the case of the asthma patients the main aim of the breathing exercises is to relax the chest muscles. Chest muscles are normally under tremendous exertion in asthma patients. The patients are constantly advised to consciously relax the chest muscles while indulging in any activity that causes exertion to their system like walking up a slope, or walking upstairs, or indulging in any sporting or sexual activity. The patient is taught to relax his arms, legs and thorax. The patients are also taught to sleep in a way that is relaxing to the chest muscles.

The patient is made to learn to lie down on one side with two pillows under the head, the upper arm and legs should be flexed forward. The upper arm should be facing backyard and the whole body should be turned forward. The patients who are slightly aging or suffering with emphysema find it very relaxing to lie down with higher pillows. Also head of the bed can be raised slightly for more comfortable lying position while sleeping and to relax respiratory muscles while sleeping. Regularly doing a few toe touching exercises and sit-ups everyday is important as it makes the abdominal muscles strong. But care should be taken to not overdo the exercises as they may exert the system and even cause damage.

Although we believe in the therapeutic and healing properties of herbs, care must be taken in the use thereof, as they are powerful compounds.

Botanical Classification: Family Aloeceae

Genus and specie: Aloe vera – Aloe barbadensis

Other names:

Barbados, Cape, Curaiao, Socotrine, and Zanzibar aloe

Description of the herb aloe vera:

Aloe vera is a clump forming perennial with rosettes of thick, fleshy, spiky, gray-green leaves, young specimens being red spotted and the plant bears yellow tubular flowers in summer.

Parts used:

The slimy inside of the leave is used (also referred to as gel) as well as a juice extracted from the pulpy inside and a yellow bitter laxative principle which is an exudate from the leaf which is dried to a crystalline substance.

To prevent any confusion, herewith a summary of uses:

Aloe vera gel:

This is the naturally occurring and undiluted gel obtained by stripping away the outer layer of the leaf.

Aloe vera concentrate or extract:

This is the product obtained when removing the water from the gel

Aloe vera juice:

This is a drink for internal use that consist of at least 50% of the pulped aloe gel.

Aloe vera latex or bitter principle:

This is a bitter yellow liquid derived from the pericyclic tubules of the rind of the aloe and which primary constituent is aloin.

Properties:

It is a bitter herb with anti-inflammatory, astringent, emollient, anti fungal, antibacterial and antiviral properties, and is useful in the eradication of parasites and stimulating the uterus.

It contains a host of compounds that are biologically active and includes anthraquinones, saccharides and prostaglandins as well as other constituents.

Anthraquinones:

The anthraquinones contained in aloe, which has the purging and laxative action on the digestive system includes aloin (barbaloin), isobarloin, anthranol, aloetic acid, anthracene, ester of cinnamic acid, aloe-emodin, emodin, chrysophanoic acid, ethereal oil as well as resistannol.

Saccharides:

It contains various saccharides including glycoprotein, mucopolysaccharide and polysaccharides such as galactose, xylose, arabinose, acetylated mannose as well as the remarkable acemannan.

Prostaglandins and fatty acids:

The conversion of fatty acids to prostaglandins are rare but the major unsaturated fatty acid, gamma-linolenic acid can be converted to 1-series prostaglandins and have a very effective influence on reducing inflammation, allergy as well as helping platelet aggregation (blood clotting at wound sites) as well as wound healing.

Other constituents:

It furthermore contains enzymes (oxidase, amylase, catalase, lipase and alkaline phosphatase) amino acids (lysine, threonine, valine, methionine, leucine, isoleucine and phenylalanine) vitamins (vitamin b1, B2, B6, C, E, folic acid, choline and beta carotene) minerals (calcium, sodium, manganese, magnesium, zinc, copper and chromium as well as other miscellaneous compounds such as cholesterol, triglycerides, steroids, uric acid, lignins, beta-sitosterol, gibberellin and salicylic acid.

Therapeutic uses:

Internal use:

The herb is used internally to combat most digestive problems, including:

constipation, poor appetite, colitis, irritable bowel syndrome as well as – asthma, diabetes, immune system enhancement, peptic ulcers

Studies have also shown that when aloe is taken internally it can stimulate and regulate various components of the immune system by stopping the inflammation and blood supply of tumors and also showed interesting results in preventing carcinogenic compounds from entering the liver and is combined in some cancer treatments.

The juice of the inner leave can be used for its anti-inflammatory effect it has on Crohn’s disease but the laxative and bitter principle of aloe must NOT be used by people suffering from Crohn’s disease as it causes griping and cramping.

It contains aloemannan which stimulates the growth of healthy kidney cells and helps to slow the formation of kidney stones.

The juice can be used very successfully to treat heartburn as well as ulcers and to sooth the lining of the digestive tract. It is not that effective to treat stress induced ulcers, but can be used for peptic ulcers caused by excess acid, aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs as well as alcohol use.

The oral use of aloe has produced good results in patients suffering from asthma when the asthma sufferers were not dependant on corticosteroids for treatment.

The exude from the leaves are used as a strong purgative and stimulant laxative but can cause griping and has an abortifacient effect and should not be used in pregnancy.

The bitter principle in aloe exudate which cause the laxative effect is preferable to use than that of cascara and senna, as aloe draws less fluid into the large intestine and are less likely to cause electrolyte imbalance than the other two.

In a study where volunteers ate 120 grams of parboiled aloe for lunch and supper a marked decrease in cholesterol, triglycerides and sugar was found, while in another test using aloe extract, it reduced fasting blood-sugar dramatically which is probably due to the stimulating effect it has on the pancreas to produce more insulin.

External use:

Aloe is used externally for the treatment of:

skin irritation, burns, scalds, sunburn, wounds, eczema, psoriasis, acne, dermatitis, ulcers, stimulate cell regeneration

The gel can be applied directly to the skin as a softening agent.

For burns and other wounds aloe is particularly effective as it activates the macrophages which fights bacterial infection while at the same time increasing circulation to the area which results in accelerated healing.

The enzymes – carboxypeptidase and bradykininase are both involved to reduce swelling, itching, reducing inflammation as well as pain.

Studies confirmed that wounds treated with aloe heal far faster than other wounds not so treated – both for traumatic as well as surgical wounds. This may be due to the fact that it contains not only vitamin E and C as well as zinc but the polysaccharides also reduce inflammation and stimulate the fibroblast and epidermal growth and repair process.

The juice is also effective for the treatment of minor wounds and insect bites by forming a “natural plaster” over the wound.

It has good astringent qualities and is usually combined with other ingredients, to make an excellent, soothing treatments for the skin and can also be used with great success on hemorrhoids (piles).

In studies it also showed a marked result in producing remission in skin cancers and its superb anti-oxidant effect is effective to help prevent skin damage from x-rays and other forms of radiation.

When applied regularly to psoriasis great results are achieved and also relieve the pain and inflammation of eczema.

When people with frostbite was treated with a cream containing aloe, the incidence of tissue loss and amputation was reduced.

Aloe-emodin which is one of the ingredients not only has a laxative effect, but is also involved in killing the herpes virus which causes cold sores and shingles.

Aromatherapy and essential oil use:

Aromatherapists use aloe vera by infusing the plant material into a base oil, such as almond or apricot kernel oil.

This macerated oil exhibits astringent, emollient, anti fungal, antibacterial, and antiviral properties.

The oil is combined in massage therapy for its healing and rejuvenating properties.

Safety precautions and warnings:

Pregnant and breast feeding women should not use aloe latex (the laxative part) internally, although the topical application of aloe to the skin has no effect on pregnant or breastfeeding women.

People suffering from problematic hemorrhoids, ulcers, diverticulosis, colitis, Crohn’s disease, or irritable bowel syndrome should consult a medical practitioner or trusted herbalist before taking aloe internally.

Extreme care should be taken with the administration of aloe laxatives, as this can cause severe digestive upsets.

When used topically, some individuals may have an allergic reaction and a skin patch test (behind the ear or on the forearm) is advised before use.

In response to a specific allergen or other trigger, an asthmatic person’s airways will become inflamed and constricted so that normal breathing is significantly hindered.

Consequently, asthmatics are dependent on a number of medications to ease their symptoms and prevent attacks. But nothing does more for preventing asthma related symptoms then significantly limiting exposure to those allergens known to trigger symptoms.

For some these can be environmental triggers, seasonal components, or everyday exposures – such as pet dander or dust – that must be limited as much as possible. But some asthmatics are just as seriously affected by the foods that they eat. So in order to decrease their symptoms and chance of attacks they must adopt a strict asthma diet so that they can increase their chance at health.

An asthma diet is different for every asthma sufferer. While some people are highly aware of the foods to which they are allergic, others must keep careful and specific records of their eating so as to notice which foods seem to correlate to increased symptoms.

Some preservatives in food also trigger asthma. So as part of an asthma diet, ingredients of food products must be scrutinized. Once it is determined what specific foods – or the preservatives included in them – are the culprits then they can be avoided through the use of an asthma diet.

For those who wish to experiment with an asthma diet, a food journal can be quite helpful in determining your specific triggers. Keep it with you at all times so that you can keep careful track of what you are eating and how you are feeling. If a food allergy is your culprit, you should be able to notice a pattern very quickly. Then you can make lifestyle changes accordingly.

If you are unsure if food is the cause of your asthma, then you may want to consult your medical professional. Your doctor will be able to test for specific allergies so that you know for sure what to avoid. This combination of medical care and proactive self-advocacy in the form of an asthma diet can put you back in control of your asthma.

Do you want to manage your condition? Are you the type of person who dislikes taking pills to counter an asthma attack? Nowadays, you can always use asthma inhalers to alleviate your symptoms. These inhalers are among the latest developments in asthma treatments. Inhalers are now widely available in drugstores and pharmacies. Doctors and asthma experts often recommend asthma inhalers to patients for immediate relief.

Asthma inhalers are portable devices. With these, you can deliver medicine straight to your lungs, anytime and anywhere you need them. However, you can’t just purchase asthma inhalers indiscriminately. Most of these can only be bought with prescriptions. If you want to use an inhaler, ask your doctor’s advice. He can tell you if this is the best treatment for you. He can also tell you what specific product you should be looking for since there is a wide variety of inhalers available in the market.

Types of Asthma Inhalers

There are many asthma inhalers, but the most common ones are the metered-dose and dry powder types.

Metered-dose inhalers make use of a chemical propellant that pushes the medicine out of the inhaler’s canister. You have to squeeze the canister to release the medication, then inhale it.

Dry powder inhalers operate the same way. However, when the medicine is released from the canister, you have to inhale more rapidly.

Both types of inhalers deliver different kinds of medication. Some are for long-term control while some are meant only for quick relief. Examples of these medications are long-acting bronchodilators and a combination of Corticosteroid and long-acting bronchodilators, as well as short-acting bronchodilators, Corticosteroids, Cromolyn or nedocromil.

Asthma inhalers can help relieve you when you are suffering from an asthma attack. And though they are handy and offer fast relief, you must be careful in using them. Always follow your doctor’s instructions regarding how often you should use your inhaler. Overdependence on the medication released by these inhalers can lead to a severe asthma attack or even death.

These guidelines contain step by step methods on how to start and proceed further with the treatment while keeping the best interests of the patient in mind.

The latest guideline released by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute or NHLBI places more emphasis on asthma assessment and control rather than severity. Interestingly, the summary of the guidelines state that the symptoms of asthma may or may not be always correlated with its severity, meaning, that the frequency and severity of the symptoms that you experience may not be directly related to the severity of your condition as there are many factors that can be considered for each and every attack that you might have.

The guideline contains essential information that will help clinicians develop more effective techniques aimed to help patients achieve long term relief with the least amount of medical intervention as possible. This also contains information on how to educate asthmatics about their condition properly so that the patient can proactively participate in the treatment process as well.

Aside from emphasizing on control rather than the severity, the guideline also points out the individualization of treatment for each patient along with possible courses of action for changes that might occur whether good or bad.

The guidelines also contain information about what should be accomplished by the clinician per patient visitation. It states that clinicians should asses the psychosocial status of the patient, his/her adherence or compliance to the medicinal regimen being given, along with its use and possible side effects.

The guideline also points out that clinicians should review the asthma action plan for every visit so that further changes can be made if necessary and that a conclusion should be reached after each and every visit whether the condition is well controlled or not.

While the NHLBI guidelines are mostly aimed at clinicians, it points out that in order to achieve long term relief and control over the condition, close partnership with the patient should be established. It also states that in whatever case, the patient will always have the final say about their treatment and that the clinician should only intervene in cases where the patient is intentionally and purposely putting him/herself in danger by not adhering to the medication or treatment being given.

So in a sense, the guidelines posted by the NHLBI gives emphasis on the care and actions that doctors should be mindful of when treating asthma, their ultimate goal and the considerations that they need to make when treatment proves ineffective.

The information contained therein will assist physicians in pro actively addressing individual needs and improve outcomes in the long run.

how people who have been diagnosed with asthma manage to get on with activities such as exercise, going for brisk walks, enjoying the sharp chill of cold winter air or going on vacation to muggy, humid climates. However, the fact is that asthma is a condition, not a disability, and it is important to learn to deal with it, and cope in a positive way.

As far as coping strategies are concerned there are several different strategies available, and they can be used in different ways to tackle the asthma and help you to manage it without jeopardizing a normal, healthy life.

In this article we will discuss asthma in 5 stages and provide a strategy for each different stage. These stages can be said to be diagnosis, pre-attack, initial attack, attack and post attack.

1. Diagnosis

Once you have been diagnosed as having asthma you will almost certainly be prescribed treatment. This is likely to be in the form of an inhaler, and these vary from turbohalers which require a forced deep breath in, to aerosol inhalers which work by pressing a button which causes a jet of spray to hit the back of your throat. There are also two types of inhaler, either preventative or reliever.

It will be very important to spend time learning about these, asking your doctor plenty of questions, trying them, and reassuring yourself that when you need to use them, you’ll be comfortable enough with them to use them effectively. This reassurance is a valuable method of helping reduce the tension and worry, and may actually reduce your frequency of use.

2. Pre Attack

You may have some idea of when you are more likely to experience shortage of breath already, such as during exercise, or in cold weather. It is always a good idea to keep a record of when you do experience a shortage of breath and the need to use an inhaler as this will help to create a pattern that will allow you to be even more prepared.

Being aware of situations that could possible cause problems will allow you to minimize panic and worry as this is only likely to exacerbate any asthmatic tendency. And if you choose to go into a situation that might cause problems, spend time relaxing your breathing, controlling it, sitting calmly for a while and stretching your lungs with several good strong deep breaths. Make sure you know where your inhalers are and go for it. Covering your mouth with a scarf when in cold air and breathing through your nose rather than your mouth are two other little strategies worth using.

3. Initial attack

Although you often hear the term asthma attack, it’s more of a gradual constriction of the bronchial passages. Very rarely do asthmatics find themselves happy one minute then gasping for air the next. It is crucial to be conscious of the first signs of breathing difficulty. As soon as that initial feeling occurs, stop and get your breathing under control. If you’re exercising, stop and try to sit down somewhere.

Don’t bend over as you will only squash your abdomen and lungs, limiting your breathing potential even more. Instead, sit up with a good straight back, and focus on your breathing. Breathe fairly deeply, slowly and with control, preferably in through the nose and out through the mouth. Relax your shoulders, dropping them completely as you exhale. In this way you may well find your breathing gets back under control without the need for an inhaler at all. Knowing how to cope in this stage can make a very positive difference.

4. Attack

Try to stay calm, as panic causes your heart to race and could lead to hyperventilation as a means to get more oxygen into your blood stream. Unfortunately, hyperventilating then makes your asthma worse, and the feeling of panic increases. Being aware of this vicious cycle is important, and being able to break it is a very positive strategy. Staying calm and in control means you can access your inhaler and operate it effectively and correctly.

5. Post Attack

After you have had an attack, make a note of it in a log book, along with what you were doing and where you were. There may be an obvious trigger such as going for a run, but there may be less obvious ones that may go unnoticed without a log, such as cleaning the kitchen floor. Cleaning a floor might seem like easy work, but it could be that the strong odor from the detergent is a trigger. Keeping a log helps you identify such patterns, and this in turn gives you ways of avoiding triggers that lead to an attack.

It’s important to know how to cope with asthma, and in particular, how to live with it. Developing strategies to cope will give you a greater sense of control, and allow you to live your life fully with less worry and fear.

Some studies show that things your child may be exposed to by his or her doctor – like vaccines or antibiotics – may even be some of the causes of childhood asthma. In fact, both the Department of Social Security in the UK and the Health Department in Australia acknowledge an association between asthma and antibiotics.

The Institute of Medicine’s Immunization Safety Review Committee reported to have found a possible connection between immune systems affected by the administration of vaccines and the development of allergies leading to childhood asthma. For these reasons among many others, it is important for parents to consider natural treatment for childhood asthma.

One of the natural treatments available for childhood asthma is marine phytoplankton. Marine phytoplankton has supports ocean life with a unique combination of life sustaining nutrients including like Omega 3 essential fatty acids, protein and vitamins. The overdependence of Americans on land-based food sources as lead to a population lacking in many nutrients. Marine phytoplankton replenishes these nutrients and promotes and maintains optimum health.

Researchers looking for natural treatments for childhood asthma have found that controlled exposure to sunlight or other sources of ultraviolet light could reduce asthma. Studies conducted by the research team at Perth’s Telethon Institute for Child Health Research and funded by the Asthma Foundation of WA illustrated the effects of ultraviolet light exposure on mice with asthmatic symptoms. Mice exposed to ultraviolet light for about 20 minutes experienced significantly less asthma-like symptoms after being introduced to an allergen. Researchers are excited to try to apply these findings to as a natural treatment for children suffering from asthma.

Homeopaths are tried and proven natural treatments for children suffering from asthma caused by allergies. Research conducted at the University of Glasgow indicates that those patients who receive very small homeopathic doses of whatever substance to which they are most allergic experience less asthmatic symptoms after just one week of treatment. In fact, over 80% patients given a homeopathic remedy improved. Some general of homeopathic treatment include better respiratory function, more open airways, easy breathing, strengthened immune system functioning and relaxed bronchioles.

Speleotherapy is one of the oldest known natural treatments for asthma. The unique microclimate of the salt mines has been reported to improve patients with various forms of bronchial asthma and other types of respiratory diseases. Every year more than 1000 children attend the Ukrainian Allergological Hospital speleotherapy clinic. The treatment is quickly becoming well known worldwide as one of the most effective natural treatments for people with asthma. The alternative to traveling to the salt mines of Eastern Europe is to inhale a salt air steam by heating salt solution in a ceramic salt inhaler.

Saying that, I do have my asthma under control and it rarely effects my life in a serious way but last year I was staying in an apartment in New York and being from the UK I wasn’t used to the air conditioning system that had been installed. I was intrigued to see what sort of effect air conditioning would have on my asthma as I had used an air purifier whilst I slept when I was young and found that it had a mildly positive effect.

Air Purifiers

Asthma is usually triggered by inhalation of air particles that contain allergens such as pollen, dust mite droppings or pollution. An air purifier can help by removing contaminants and allergens from a contained environment by passing the air through a filter that collects them and stores them away. The majority of these allergens can be removed fairly easily from the air and the filter can also reduce the amount of fine pet hairs in the atmosphere. This helps relieve asthma symptoms which in turn helps an asthmatic get a good nights sleep although it is certainly not a one stop solution. A regularly cleaned environment with good air ventilation as well as reducing the amount of carpeting will also help to reduce symptoms.

Air Conditioning

Air conditioning can help asthmatics by maintaining a consistent indoor environment free from the pollen and pollution from outside. Air conditioning helps as if you live in an area with high levels of pollution, or if there are hot nights during the summer when pollen levels are high it allows you to keep windows and doors shut. Air conditioning lowers the humidity indoors which helps to control the amount of mold spours in the atmosphere as well as the number of dust mites.

In my personal experience I found that the air conditioning really helped when I was in New York especially as I was spending my days in the hussle and bussle of the busy streets. It was nice to be able to come home at the end of the day, turn on the air conditioning and cool off as well as getting a good nights sleep.

Asthma cough is different than a conventional cough and it’s important to differentiate between the two.

One of the most difficult things for parents is determining what is asthma cough and what is conventional coughing. There is a distinct difference. In fact, don’t guess. The best course of action is to make an appointment to see your doctor. The truth is doctors even have difficulty in establishing the difference between the two.

Identifying Asthma Cough

Let’s look at what asthma cough is. Essentially, asthma cough is non productive. By non productive, mucus isn’t brought up. In fact, it’s unique and has a sound all to it’s own. It’s very much a dry, wheezing sound and can persist until a child or adult gets to the stage where they are gasping for air. So no mucus and the chances are it’s an asthma cough: if their is mucus, then it may be the signs of an impending cold.

The Cause Of Asthma Cough?

The most likely cause are allergens or irritants. The home is a common trigger factor and harbors a number of these symptom producing culprits. When a person reacts to these allergens or irritants the result will be a swelling in the airways causing muscle spasms in and around the bronchial passages. Because it’s an irritant and not mucus productive, the obvious reaction is to cough and the reason why it’s dry. Trying to force the irritating factor through the bronchial passages means the coughing will usually be prolonged and eventually lead to shortness of breath and dry reaching.

Asthma Cough Treatment

One of the best responsive treatments is the use of bronchodilators. They are effective in loosening the muscles around the bronchial tubes, soothing the cough and providing much needed respite to the sufferer. Lack of air movement when the muscles become tight around the bronchial tubes is akin to a “bear hug” being applied the use of broncodilators eases this restrictive effect, forcing the air back through the passages.

Effective treatment also includes the use of inhaled corticosteroids. This anti-inflammatory treatment has the effect of easing the swelling, usually chronic, around the bronchial area thus making their job of forcing out any irritants a lot easier.

Other Treatment Methods

Herbal specialists have been sought in recent times and recommendations such as tea, black or green, are said to provide some relief against asthma cough symptoms. Honey can also provide relief particularly before going to bed at night. How effective these treatments are compared to more traditional medical treatments shouldn’t really be an issue as they are intended more to compliment those treatments.

Eliminating most of the allergens and irritants from the home may not be possible, in fact, it’s nigh on impossible however, with good management practice techniques, asthma cough incidence can be kept to a minimum.
